Small Business Owners: Becoming More Efficient

Author: Lin Jenkins

Many small business owners fall into the trap of trying to do everything themselves. It`s easy to do, particularly if you started out on no budget and as the only person working. However, once your small business has grown a little, it`s time to start letting go and become more efficient.

How does a small business owner become more efficient? There are a few ways to save yourself both time and money by making everything easier to run.

Start outsourcing. By doing everything themselves, small business owners usually feel that they are saving money, but the opposite is often true. When you spend three hours working on something that a professional could do in an hour for $50 and your time is worth twice that . . . you`re losing money and it`s just not worth it. Not to mention, a professional will be able to do things that you probably haven`t even considered. For example, just about anyone can put together a rudimentary header for their blog, but a graphic artist will be able to turn out one that actually draws people in.

Have a plan. Know where your business is going and how to get there. Small business owners who have a business and a marketing plan find that they are far more efficient than those who are flying by the seat of their pants. These plans help keep you on track and ensure that you don`t get distracted . . . you`ll always know what the next step is and can move on to that without spending time wondering what to do next.

Go with templates. Rather than doing everything from scratch, such as writing your own contracts, forms or employee manuals, it`s far faster and cheaper to simply adapt one that is already written. There are boilerplate forms for just about everything and having some of these on hand will make it quick and easy to whip out new forms, letters, or anything else you need. In most cases, you will only need to change a few key details, such as names and contact information, so it literally takes a few minutes to do.

Set up procedures and policies. Most small businesses have specific tasks that are performed over and over again. Your business will run more efficiently and be more effective if you have a set way to do things. New employees can refer to the procedures and this also ensures that each task will be performed the same way each time, maintaining a consistency that is rare in disorganized businesses. It also saves time because you won`t need to explain the same thing several times as someone new is learning.

Running things in an efficient manner will improve everything about your business including your bottom line, as many small business owners have found. By setting things up so you can let others take over certain areas of business, you`ll be able to focus your efforts on growth and building a successful company, like you intended to do in the beginning.
